    Papers

    Chorus:
Papers, papers, read all about the news
Papers, papers, filled with the daily blues

On any page you will find disiater
    Servant killing off his master
And a long lost hero coming out the jungle
    Someone's sseretes up for grabs
    Fortunes found in taxi cabs
Find out how your leaders stall and stumble

    Chorus:papers, papers
    Inside stories about swindles
    Unearend incomes start to dwindle
Of attempts to cross a dolphin with a seal
There's such varied information on the problems of inflation
That you wonder whether real is really real

    Chorus: Papers, papers
They may have found oil beneath the sea
Thank God for beauty that's on page three
A naked lady means more to me, more to see

    Chorus: Papers, papers

    Fools Gold

    Close the door
    Come inside
There's a story here that will not be denied
    That tells of fools gold
That turned the hearts cold of many men
    Way back then
Who believed they stood for music and their dream
But when the hurt comes only boys run for money men
So they work away all day in pain of losing their success
In a life of chauffered cars hotels and one unholy mess
Of pimps and hangers on who only beat the gong for ten per cent
    Renting out souls

    Yes there've been some
    Who've tried in vain
To preserve just what was left of their brain
But in the end they fell
    Into a bottomless hell
    The prey of pens
    And poison friends
    Who sold out their secrets
    And scarred their good intent
And all that's left is space
    And the strange disgrace
    Of lives well meant

    So they swallow leapers
    And mothers weep
    At headlines for a day
    And their heads hit walls
    And can only call
    Help me please I pray
For those that are next in line
    Have a real good time
Just while ye may, Hey Hey Hey

    Nobody Can

    Nobody Can

Well I was young and I was new
Thought there was nothing that I couldn't do
Threw away my pride, threw away my bread
    I didn't care whatever I said
Now nobody can give it back
    Nobody can make it last
No nobody, nobody nobody can give me back the past
Well I was young and I was lost
Oh Lordy Lordy look what it cost
Ittook my time and it took my tears
It took away all those prescious years
Well now the hardest thing for me to take
Born as I am I make the same mistakes
Never mind, never mind here I go
I'm feeling high and singing low
Now nobody can give it back

    A Little Inch

Time is slipping by and each day seems a little bluer
Everything that you told me seems just a little truer
Why did I then walk away, when all I had to do was say
Stay just a little longer girl and try to be a little stronger girl
Don't you know my love was just a little inch away

    And time is slipping by
And all I have is old emotions
I don't want to start again
And go thro' all the motions
But your face has left it's mark
And I'm just a voice crying in the dark
Stay just a little onger girl
And try and be a little stronger girl
But I was too proud to move
    A little inch your way

    Changing Partners

I thought at the beginning we could see the end and we could stay together
    see what love could bring
But the time has changed us and the whole world too, so we're changin'
partners tell me what to do

I gave you all my money and I shared my heart
But you took them both and they were torn apart
I didn't know how stupid I could be but I won't forget until eternity.

    Mama Divine

First time that I saw her closely
Swinging down the street so proud
I could not retain my cool
And I was moved to shout out loud
Hey Mama I could do things
That would make you forever mine
Hey Mama come and get me
Find out why I'm called divine
Yes my name it is Divine
I can give you a rea=l good time

She flashe me a smile so dazzling
I was forced to don my shades
I put my tremblin' arms around herWhispered Mama don't be afraid
Hey Mama I could show you
Why the world is round and fast
Why you need a young man like me
I can make you make it last
Yes my name it is divine and I can give you a real good time

So we took the proper turning
WE married and had children three
It's just not what my Mama can do
It's what my Mama can do for me
Hey Mama didn't I tell you
Didn't your baby say don't wait
When a country boy says something
He will give it to you straight
Hey Mama I could show you
Why the round is round and fast
Why you need a young man like me
I can make you make it last
Yes my name it is Divine

    Too Many People

    Too many people have died
    Too many people have cried
    Too many people are cold
    Bless my soul

    Too many people have paid
    Too many people have strayed
    Too many people are wrong
    Bless my song
    In the sunlight's stream
It always seems that innocents stray
Too lost to keep in touch with what they need
    Too involved to be free

    Keep on Rollin'

    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
Let those miles roll 'neath your feet
    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
Nothin' stops the driver in the seat

    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
With a little girl always by your side
    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
Just as long as you don't make that girl your bride

    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
Let the world have the problems you can't take
    Keep on rollin' rollin' rollin'
Just live your life alone for your own sake

    It's Not Easy

    It's not easy to explain
Why it's hard for me to refrain
For hurting you and searching for some feeling
If I knew myslf so well
It would be easier to tell
Why hurting you would help me face the feeling
Life is so short and time is too long
To spend on mistakes when we know it's wrong
    We must never say goodbye
We must look fate in the eye
I'm hurting you and searching for some feeling
Life is to know and find what is real
Excuse me revealing those lines that I feel
It's not easy on your own
When all around you friends have known
Your life was built on selfish preservation
And behind the smile you wear
Is a heart that tried to care
And a soul too much involved with sweet sensation.

    Sweet 'P'

Don't call me on the telephone
'Cos I can't see your face
Don't write a letter, don't try to explain
    We all make mistakes

Don't try and be a moody one
    'Cos I've been hurt before
I know the reason you've just got bored
With the boy who lives next door

So if you must tell me goodbye
Don't ever tell me not to cry
A little human kindness goes a long way
    With a boy like me
So baby can't you see that in my life
    It's always been Sweet P
    You're looking fine
    Gee you're looking swell
P you'll never ever be mine

    The Drinkers Curse

Just one more drink before they take my glass away
Just one more drink before all those nice people fade away
    Just one more drink
    Just one more drink today
Chorus: I don't think I can go any further
Me I tried so hard it'll make your hair . . curl. . . sir
Because it's bad it's worse and worse
    Oh it's the drinkers curse

I ain't got no car 'cos the police took the keys
No I ain't got no car I'll have to struggle back home on my knees
Past all the houses of my friends that've been so good to me!

I'm down on the pavement and I'm looking for a light
The matches are so damned hard to find late at night
I can't get it wrong and I can't get it right because
Chorus: Me I don't think I can go any further
Me I tried so hard it'll make your hair . . curl. . . sir
It's bad, it's worse and worse
    It's the drinkers curse.

    My add. to "Fools Gold"

    "Come inside
    close the door
there's a story here that will not be denied
the tales of fools gold" etc....

That's how I always heard it,- but I might be wrong! - Remember, I'm Danish!! :D

This one I copied from the lyric sheet -- so I'll go with what was printed for now -- but yours works too!

Holly, you may be right, but it's not always right what's written on the lyric sheet. - Sometimes it's just people like you and I who listens to the songs and then write it down. I never really always trust those lyric sheets. :)

Good point! I have changed some lyrics from the sheets here and there when it was clear they were wrong...well, I'm happy to have this one changed if others agree. :D

Holly will you let me know if you make any changes so that I can update the A - Z as well. Thanks

Actually, Jean, Fool's Gold is one YOU posted -- so if you want to make the change Julia suggested, go ahead! :)

But I did change the And So Goodbye lyrics over on the Savaloy Dip thread, if you want to carry that change on into the A-Z.

    Holly.....
I hope that you didn't take it the wrong way? - Whether I may be right or wrong, I'm just trying to participate? - My interpretation of some of Alan's lyrics may very well be wrong? (As you've explained to me about "Jarrow Song",- and listening to it again, I totally agree with you. As well as one word in "And So Goodbye". - I've listened to that song a couple of times now, and "your" lyrics suddenly make sense.) - So, please, bear with me.... and my mistakes..... You have to remember that I'm Danish, and English is only my second language... :?:

And your Danish is MUCH better than mine. :D No, it really helps to have other pairs of ears contributing. But I think you are right about Fool's Gold, and I agree that the lyrics sheets are not necessarily the artist's own words.
