    Happy Land
    By Randy Newman
Album: A Price On His Head. Posted by hollyh

The wind is cold, the morning skies are gray
As through the fog I walk along the bay
Past a regiment of rusty swings
Of sandy fields, of broken dreams...

    The ferris wheel was turning
    And the roller coaster roared
    The morning sun was burning
On the hot dog stands and the candy stores
And they had chocolate ice cream
    And apples on a stick
Big old jars with gumdrops in 'em
And if you guessed it right you'd win 'em

    Happy land, happy land
Land that dreams are made of
    Happy land, happy land
You can have a real nice time
Any ride for just one dime

What a great place, to be four or five
    If they'll let you alone
They have these cars that you can drive
And every turn you were wrong
I was much better off when I was pretending,
    Now everything's far too real

    Happy land, happy land
Land that dreams are made of
    Carousels, wishing wells,
You can have a real nice time
Any ride for just one dime

What a great place, to be four or five
    If they'll let you alone
They have these cars that you can drive
And every turn you were wrong
I was much better off when I was pretending,
    Now everything's far too real

    Happy land, happy land
Land that dreams are made of
    Carousels, wishing wells,
You can have a real nice time
Any ride for just one dime...

    Help From You
Album: Luck Day. Posted by JJean

In a silent world of dreams
    That's where I live
And only truth will bring me round
I grew up and when I learnt just how to live
I knew I would leave this town
And all the friends I'd made
That's when I began to change

Won't somebody tell me where I've got to go?
I just want to be in the chorus of the show
nd if chance won't let me be the one to win
As long as I can try I will do it with a grin
And all I need is help me please
    Help me please indeed
    I need help from you.

    Hi- Lili, Hi-Lo
    By Kaper/Deutsch
Album: The Price To Play. Posted by hollyh

On every tree there sits a bird
    Singing a song of love...

A song of love is a sad song
    Hi-Lili, hi-lili, hi-lo
A song of love is a song of woe
Don't ask me how I know
A song of love is such a sad song
For I have loved and it's so
I sit at my window and I watch the rain
    Hi-Lili, hi-lili, hi-lo
And tomorrow I'll probably love again
    Hi-Lili, hi-lili, hi-lo
Now hit me, hit me, hit me now...

Let me tell you now a song of love is such a sad song
I have loved and it's so
You know I sit at my window and I watch the rain
    Hi-Lili, hi-lili, hi-lo
And don't you know that tomorrow I'll probably love once more
    Hi-Lili, hi-lili, hi-lo
    Don't you know, la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la-lah-la la-la-la...

    How Cruel Love Can Be
Album: Kon Tors. Posted by JJean

    Time goes by every day
You're getting further and further away
I can never find a way to keep your love
It all goes round and round I swear by God above
You will see - how cruel love can be

I can give you everything a girl could ever need
I don't see why I should always have to beg and plead
This is not the way to give a guy a happy time
But if you insist on hurting you will find
You will see - how cruel love can be

I sit by for hours watching other people dance
I sit by for hours watching their romance
They're always happy and I'm always blue
And you know the reason Baby - I love you

    Time goes by every day
You're getting further and further away
I can never find a way to keep your love
It all goes round and round I swear by God above
You will see - how cruel love will be

I sit by for hours watching other people dance
I sit by for hours watching their romance
They're always happy and I'm always blue
And you know the reason Baby - I love you

I can give you everything a girl could ever need
I don't see why I should always have to beg and plead
This is not the way to give a guy a happy time
But if you insist on hurting you will find
You will see - how cruel love can be
    How cruel love can be
    How cruel love can be

    Hungry for Love
Album: Shouts Across The Street. Posted by hollyh

    I'm hungry for love
    I ain't ate a thing all week
    I'm hungry for love
I'm tired of playin' hide and seek
So, honey, won't you be my baby tonight
You and I will put out the light
    Make no mistake
    Because I'm hungry for love

I can feel it right now
I can feel it darlin', in my bones
I can feel it right now
I'm tired of bein' on my own
So turn on the radio and let it blast
I just wanna get it while it lasts
    Make no mistake
    Because I'm hungry for love

I have to say this... I didn't know where else to post this, but I have to say, we just have to include 'The House of the Rising Sun' in here somewhere. Now I know, I know and know that people have discussed this song a million times before I have, and people will still discuss it after we've ceased to live. But I have to say, let's stop and think about what made that song so great. It's enormous. It has a grandeur, a true grandeur. It's powerful, it shakes the audience to the marrow with the rawness of the truth of human condition. Many songs will do that- songs do belong, to a certain extent, to the realm of literature.

'The Rising Sun' is, to start with, a literary piece: it has a very recognizable esthetic, with influences of the late romantic period and with a hint of the American poetic style pre-Depression era that followed. Like another work of literature it engages the senses and mobilises emotions. You can say that of any piece of music, but here I'm strictly talking about the lyrics. It depicts the conditions of the poor of New Orleans with a tone of realism, talking about common activities that actually, even in the song, bring its short-lived characters to life- that life enhanced with the glow of music. It speaks about fatality, about mistakes and the price to pay for making those mistakes. And not only that, its timeless message- the one of human strife and absurdity, which reminds us of Pascal's own 'Thoughts', is accompanied with a melody worthy of the great Greekian plays. Whether it was because of camera shyness or not, who knows, the music and the melody tremble with emotion, translating into sounds the protagonist's bitter sorrow for the fate he (or sometimes she) is enslaved to.

    Just listen to this, again:

Such a song and such a rendition will never be surpassed in our times. Art at its perfection. And I don't know whether all those stories are true, whether Alan Price really hated the song or not, whatever, they don't matter. At all. This wonderful rendition is such a masterpiece that it even makes itself more beautiful and profound with every single passing day. The music is great and poetic, the story brings us back to human fate and we all can relate to it.

There will never be another Rising Sun in a million years. What I've said, we can say the same (or almost) about other songs as well, but in this case there is a special light that shines on this rendition, it has an extra power, its own magic, its own strength capable of leaving you entranced when it's over. And that, is art for you :)

Absolutely, let's add it. In fact, we could add any Animals songs we want to. Lullaby, feel free to post any more lyrics.
