If I weren't so curious by nature, I'd never be here.
A few years ago, while looking up the history of the legendary Animals someplace (and I can't remember where exactly), I read that the guy behind keyboards had left them and had taken his own path in music.
"Really?" I thought to myself. Intrigued, I hunted around for some tracks I could listen to, when I did, the first one being his version of "I Put A Spell On You"... lo and behold! I was astounded, blown away, ever since I've thought he's a pure genius, bla bla bla, you know how it goes.
I must admit, I'm not always very impressed by middle-of-the-road artists, I tend to be a little picky. Either you're a good middle-of-the-road musician, or you're the other kind, the one who skids and slips and at the end of the day, isn't really worth knowing.
In Alan Price's case, I made an exception. He can play anything if he wants to- maybe not sing anything, but with all the songs he's performed over the years, he's really proven to be a wide-ranged artist. You might think this is nutts of me to say, but I'll bet he could bring the house down with a rendition of Jackie Souder's 'Gotta Get a Girl', with a 1920's style brass section and orchestra. Tunes of the sort. I've pointed this out to a friend- I haven't heard his reaction yet.
As for the kind of new member I am, I'll just put it this way: my motto is 'Live to inspire and be inspired.' And just recently, someone inspired me to sign up on this thing, so, let's see how I manage to get around.
I'm hoping to become a writer, and if my life can allow me to, play gigs around my hometown. Rock n roll, jazz ('20's and 30's like Bix Beiderbecke), and once in a while, I'll listen to classical music. I'm kind of open to different styles, but I can't stand mediocrity.
But when it comes to my music skills, I don't think very highly of them, nor do I do for my writing. I try to be practical about things. Sometimes I get too complex, and look hard for something simple. And I also make incredibly stupid decisions... and forget to put the toothpaste cap back on. But, I can pull it off. At my tender age, (17), I'm still a learner. Among other things, I love checking out antiques, pulling out old pictures from times I haven't known, spinning old records, philosophy, beach glass, the low red sun when I'm downtown after bowling, camping and getting 23 mosquito bites, Naughty Nellies (brown beer), thunderstorms- life. I don't want to get into details. And of course, Alan Price's music. It's great, even when you're driving down the highway. I like him more than I like Randy Newman. And I just thought to myself... how much fun would my playlist on my machine be without an A.P. tune? The answer is this: not as much.
