Alan Price Live In Concert 2009 - Review
ALAN PRICE LIVE IN CONCERT
Maddermarket Theatre Norwich
3rd June 2009

What a great evening we had seeing Alan Price Live
- with songs enjoyed as much today as when they
first appeared. Alan was in great voice as always
with his usual Geordie humour and the exuberance
of his performance belies his 67 years.

The set started with The Glass Mountain/ Goin’ Down
Slow - great jamming session to begin the show. Zoot
Money managed LetThe Good Times Roll despite
having a bad throat which resulted in much hilarity when
he did a bit of ‘Wandering Star’ with a very growly voice!!
Next was Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear
by Alan who then gave a witty account of the 1969 moon
landing which led to a Bobby Tench solo Moon Dancing.
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put A Spell On You, always a
great favourite, was performed by Alan with great vitality
and we were assured the ambulance staff were standing
by while he sang this number (you must see the show to
enjoy the joke).Four songs from O Lucky Man - O Lucky
Man, Sell Sell Sell, Poor People and Changes brought
us to the interval.

Second half started with a handclapping SoulSerenade
then Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. A very dynamic
performance of Boom Boom by Alan leading toThis Is
The House That Jack Built, Don’t Stop The Carnival and
Bring It On Home To Me, and finally What Am I Living For
to end this section. Martin Wild then gave us a great drum
solo and Peter Grant a superb Bass Guitar solo, the energy
of these two getting deserved applause.Alan returned to the
stage with Girl From The North Country and We Gotta Get
Out Of This Place then brought the show to an exhilarating
end with The House Of The Rising Sun, Jarrow Song/
Changes/Jarrow Song. The appreciation of the audience
was evident by great applause.Well done Alan and the lads!

Once again an absolutely wonderful evening - where
does one find enough superlatives to describe an
Alan Price show? After such an exhausting performance
he still comes out front to talk to the fans and was heard
to remark “We haven’t got much time left”. Was he
referring to how many more years can they continue?
- for several more years we hope Mr Price!!!
(Just wondering if I can possibly get to another show
of this 2009 tour).

This brochure 'dedicated to the life and work
of Alan Price' was available on the merchandise desk
plus a choice of 2 CDs - Between Today And Yesterday
and Based On A True Story.

WoW! Jean, thank you sooooo much for this performance set list and commentary! I feel like I was right there beside you, enjoying the show! (Well, almost.)

For all of us who can't attend Alan's concerts, there are several videos on Youtube of Alan - and The Manfreds' - 23rd May 2009 performance at Nottingham Market Square.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96cN-_rUX...re=channel ("I Put A Spell On You/ Boom Boom")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIPK72Lr7...re=channel (Jarrow Song")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGB85HI23...re=channel ("Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S8jE5_YB...re=channel ("The House Of The Rising Sun")

I'd suggest watching them (and/or downloading them) soon, as YouTube videos sometimes disappear without notice.

Fantastic review, Jean! You make me feel as if I had been there (oh, if only!). I love how generous Alan is with this group of talented musicians he has gathered around him. Zoot and Bobby are such wonderful musicians, I'm sure they could have so many other gigs -- and yet they choose to play with Alan, and he seems to appreciate that and give them plenty of scope to share the spotlight. I also remember how fantastic Peter Grant's bass solo was when I saw them. Bass solos are rarely so engrossing!!

You can leave it all to me...

RE: Alan Price Live In Concert 2009 - Review
Here's a link to a review of the show in York: York review

Flamingo' - Grand Opera House, York
12:03pm Wednesday 21st October 2009

By Jon Butler

Alan Price transformed a night at the Opera House in York into a ‘Night at the Flamingo,’ the famous club that was to London what The Cavern Club was to Liverpool.

Joined by Zoot Money, Bobby Tench, Chris Farlowe and Maggie Bell, Price’s dry raconteur style was as engaging as his music.

The set opened with ‘Hear Me Crying’ – an early Animals song followed by ‘Black Magic Woman’ that enabled Tench to showcase the smooth and fluent tones of his guitar.

At times the show was more like an after-dinner speech punctuated by some great tunes as Price regaled his audience with witty anecdotes, all delivered in that familiar warm Geordie accent, reinforced by his infectious smile and big personality. The format begs comparison with his asynchronous counterpart Jools Holland. The latter is without question a great piano player and band leader, but Price arguably matched Holland in those departments, but surpasses him when it comes to singing and providing continuity through his effortless bonhomie.

It’s therefore unlikely anyone in the audience at York would object to this Geordie boy being given his own TV show… but they would probably insist on it being Sooner rather than Later!

The case for such a delight is only strengthened by the awesome rendition Zoot Money gave of ‘Please Stop The Wedding,' and when Price himself played and sang ‘House of the Rising Sun,' the piano solo was as recognisable as any signature tune, and stunning in it’s execution.

Well worth rediscovering…

You can leave it all to me...
